Lisbon up the Atlantic coast

Out of Lisbon and onto the back roads of the west coast: fishing and surfing villages, orchards, and the ocean alongside most of the way north to Nazaré and São Pedro de Moel.

Into the Douro Valley

East into the Douro, the world’s oldest demarcated wine region, following the river through terraced vineyards to Quinta de la Rosa above Pinhão, in the middle of the harvest.

North into the Minho

North out of the Douro through green-wine country toward the mountains of the Minho, by way of Casa do Penedo, the little house built into the boulders near Fafe.

Through Peneda-Gerês, Portugal’s only national park: granite ridges, oak and pine forest and stone villages, then down to Braga for the night.

Down the N2 to Marvão

South on the N2, Portugal’s longest road and its answer to Route 66, and on to the hilltop fortress of Marvão on the Spanish border.
